7. Chronique des Indiens Guayaki : ce que savent les Aché, chasseurs nomades du Paraguay by Clastres, Pierre Publication: [Paris] Plon, 1972 . 286 p ; 18 cm. , Donation Ex Libris Proinsias Mac Cana. | Review This is an extraordinary anthropological document, a riveting account of a year spent living with a so-called 'savage' tribe of Indians in Paraguay in 1963. With a directness and humanity exceptionally free of Western assumptions, Clastres gives a portrait of the character and daily life of a people once hunted by white men, and now virtually extinct. This is a society in which unimaginable freedoms exist alongside the strictest of taboos. Infanticide is practised for personal convenience when a second baby is born before the first one is weaned, but the courtesy of a song must be shown to the carcass of a hunted animal which must never be viewed simply as a neutral piece of food. It is also a society where a woman has several husbands and her children treat them all equally as their fathers, while at the same time, the men sleep in precisely designated configurations alongside the woman in order of their status. Only at the very end of this time with the Indians does he make the discovery, strenuously denied during his stay, that the tribe are in fact cannibals. In seeking an understanding of these things, in an unsentimental yet sympathetic way, Clastres unravels the rich mythology of the tribe that underpins the complex structure of their lives. He stands in the great tradition of French anthropology of Durkheim and Levi-Strauss, his singular work cut short only by his early death in a car accident at the age of 43 ... this highly readable account testifies not only to a vanished people but also to the work of a man whose death was a great loss to anthropology. 21. The Interpretation of Cultures : selected essays by Geertz, Clifford Publication: London Fontana, 1993, c1973 . ix, 470 p. , Donation Ex Libris Proinsias Mac Cana. | History and edition Originally published: New York : Basic Books, 1973. | Review What role does culture play in social life? A distinguished anthropologist restates the paramount question of his discipline and offers some brilliant conjectures. Hominization shows that the traits that were thought unique to homo sapiens (tools, language, social organization) not only preceded him, but contributed to the biological evolution which culminated in sapiens. Culture is, therefore, necessary not merely to man's survival but to his existential realization. How should it be properly studied? The starting point for a theory of culture, Geertz tells us, is a conception of thinking as a social act: a traffic in significant symbols. Groups employ machineries of meaning to orient themselves in the world. Only after having understood these programs for the regulation of behavior can we legitimately relate culture to social structure. This is precisely what the different "sociologies" - of religion, ideology, and knowledge - fail to do. But anthropology comes to the rescue. It gives us access to the conceptual worlds of peoples so that we can, in an extended sense of the term, converse with them. Geertz calls it "thick description": a scientific phenomenonology of culture that is different from the all too cerebral puzzle-solving of Levi-Strauss. Geertz applies this semiotic perspective to the study of ritual, religion, and world-view in various societies and analyzes the ideological ferment in the new states. These often eloquent, sometimes verbose, essays were written in the early '60's. The author has revised some of them for this volume, but in a more basic sense the book is surprisingly dated: it is steeped in functionalism of Parsonian vintage. (Kirkus Reviews) 20 cm.
