Sir William Petty completed a survey of County Down in 1656 which he used to form the basis of his 1683 publication Hiberniae Delineatio quoad hactenus licuit, Perfectissima Studio Guilielmi Petty. Petty's atlas of Ireland is compiled of 36 maps: one general map of Ireland, four regional maps, and 31 maps of individual counties. This later edition of his atlas published in the 1730s by Grierson, is accompanied by a portrait of the cartographer.

Maps of the counties of Antrim, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Roscommon and Tipperary are folded.
